Healing Practice of Mudra
A Technology of Consciousness

Mudras are a non-verbal mode of communication and self-expression,
consisting of hand gestures and finger-postures. Mudras are symbolic sign
based finger patterns taking the place, but retaining the efficacy of the spoken
word, and are used to evoke in the mind ideas symbolizing divine powers or the
deities themselves. The composition of a mudra is based on certain movements
of the fingers; in other words, mudras constitute a highly stylized form of body or
hand language. A mudra is an external expression of 'inner resolve', suggesting
that such non-verbal communications are more powerful than the spoken word.

Mudras Can Regulate the Five Elements of the Body*

When a finger representing an element is brought into contact with the thumb, that element is brought into balance. Therefore the disease caused by the imbalance is cured. Mudras start electromagnetic currents within the body, which balance various constituting elements and restore health. The joining of fingers creates an effect on the human body.

The Universe is composed of five elements, earth, air, water, fire, and ether. Similarly our body is also a union of five elements which is represented by our five fingers. Hand mudras regulate these five elements in our body. The fingers representing five elements are:
Thumb for Fire;
Index finger (Jupiter finger) for Air;
Middle finger (Saturn finger) for Aakash (Ether or Space);
Ring finger (Sun finger) for Earth;
Little finger (Mercury finger) for Water. See More.

Also see Reflexlology Foot Chart.

How to perform hand mudras

Mudras in general are actions of hands and fingers that can be performed at any time in any way, like sitting, standing, walking or travelling. So there's no need to devote a special time to perform a mudra, but the maximum benefit is by doing it in sitting posture, especially in sukhasana (easy pose), vajrasana, or padmasana. (See photos, L to R) If you have constriants of time you can even perform them in installments. See KirtanKriyaByYogiBhajan.com. See Siri Mantra Meditation.

MAJOR MUDRAS

Timing and duration for mudras

In the initial phase mudras should be performed for at least 10 minutes and then can be extended to 30 minutes to 1 hour. Mudras are very powerful. If practiced regularly, you'll experience the health benefits. (See Disease/Mudra list.)

Meridians of The Hand

"The feet express the heavens and the hands express the feet. If
you want to adjust the psychic body, massage the feet. If you want
to adjust the physical body, massage the hands."
-- Yogi Bhajan

Detailed Hand Charts

The Fingers should be long in proportion to the palm, they then denote greater intellectuality and mental power. When short and stubby looking, the subject is inclined to exhibit animalism and gross materialism. See Kundalini Yoga Mudras. See Chotskies and Chakras. See Foot Chart.
