America’s Founding Principles Are in Danger of Corruption

Welcome to the age of vanity politics and campaigns-for-hire. What would our founders make of this nightmare?

Four qualities have distinguished republican government from ancient Athens forward: the sovereignty of the people; a sense of the common good; government dedicated to the commonwealth; and resistance to corruption. Measured against the standards established for republics from ancient times, the American Republic is massively corrupt.

From Plato and Aristotle forward, corruption was meant to describe actions and decisions that put a narrow, special, or personal interest ahead of the interest of the public or commonwealth. Corruption did not have to stoop to money under the table, vote buying, or even renting out the Lincoln bedroom. In the governing of a republic, corruption was self-interest placed above the interest of all—the public interest.

By that standard, can anyone seriously doubt that our republic, our government, is corrupt? There have been Teapot Domes and financial scandals of one kind or another throughout our nation’s history. There has never been a time, however, when the government of the United States was so perversely and systematically dedicated to special interests, earmarks, side deals, log-rolling, vote-trading, and sweetheart deals of one kind or another.

What brought us to this? A sinister system combining staggering campaign costs, political contributions, political action committees, special interest payments for access, and, most of all, the rise of the lobbying class.

Worst of all, the army of lobbyists that started relatively small in the mid-twentieth century has now grown to big battalions of law firms and lobbying firms of the right, left, and an amalgam of both. And that gargantuan, if not reptilian, industry now takes on board former members of the House and the Senate and their personal and committee staffs. And they are all getting fabulously rich. -- Source.

The power and reach of corporations is too excessive
according to Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy.
(Halliburton and BP readily come to mind.)

Dwight D. Eisenhower                John F. Kennedy

On at least one occasion, President Eisenhower was heard to say by
those in the room, “God help this country when somebody sits at
this desk who doesn’t know as much about the military as I do.”

President Eisenhower's transcribed text

"My fellow Americans: This evening I come to you with a message
of leave-taking and farewell, and to share a few final thoughts with
you, my countrymen. We have been compelled to create a permanent
armaments industry of vast proportions. Three and a half million men
and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment.
The total influence, economic, political, even spiritual, is felt in every
city, every state-house, every office of the federal government. We
recognize the imperative need for this development yet we must not fail
to comprehend its grave implications. … In the councils of government
we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence whether
sought of unsought by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the
disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let
the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes." --

QUESTION: Has the U.S. government become a criminal enterprise?
"BRIBERY: The offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of something
of value for the purpose of influencing the action of an official
in the discharge of his or her public or legal duties."
What about 'Citizens United' campaign contributions?

On September 20, 1963, President John F. Kennedy
gave a speech at the United Nations that proposed converting
the “moon race” to a cooperative venture with the Soviet Union,
not an action favored by corporate-military-industrial interests.

SPECIAL NOTE: Some observers allege it is this speech that persuaded
corporate-military-industrial interests to conspire to kill President Kennedy.

"The basic problems facing the world today are not susceptible to a military solution."

The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it.

Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it is in my control.

And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words here tonight as an excuse to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up our mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserve to know.

For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence -- on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day.

It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations.

Its preparations are concealed, not published. Its mistakes are buried not headlined. Its dissenters are silenced, not praised. No expenditure is questioned, no rumor is printed, no secret is revealed.

Without debate, without criticism, no Administration and no country can succeed -- and no republic can survive. That is why the Athenian lawmaker Solon decreed it a crime for any citizen to shrink from controversy.

And that is why our press was protected by the First (emphasized) Amendment -- the only business in America specifically protected by the Constitution -- not primarily to amuse and entertain, not to emphasize the trivial and sentimental, not to simply "give the public what it wants" -- but to inform, to arouse, to reflect, to state our dangers and our opportunities, to indicate our crises and our choices, to lead, mold educate and sometimes even anger public opinion.

This means greater coverage and analysis of international news -- for it is no longer far away and foreign but close at hand and local. It means greater attention to improved understanding of the news as well as improved transmission. And it means, finally, that government at all levels, must meet its obligation to provide you with the fullest possible information outside the narrowest limits of national security...

And so it is to the printing press -- to the recorder of mans deeds, the keeper of his conscience, the courier of his news -- that we look for strength and assistance, confident that with your help man will be what he was born to be: free and independent. -- John F. Kennedy

"Capitalism as practiced in this the Age of Aquarius is hopelessly flawed.
Today's capitalists have it all backwards. This is the new paradigm: Serve
consumers and profit will follow, i.e., service trumps the dollar. Those
who fail to put serving consumers first will become irrelevant."

"Who currently stands to profit the most from the processing of our food, the
delivery of energy and medical care, and from each social conflict and war?
The all-pervasive corporate-military-industrial-financial-energy-medical complex."

"The truth is more like this: 9/11 was orchestrated by a criminal
enterprise that's infiltrated and compromised various sectors of our
government as well as the private sector and the military. Not good as
a sound bite but closer to the truth...Everyone seems to have a hand in
this...CIA, FBI, Bush admininstration, various corporations and the
elites bastards that run them, the military, FAA, the list goes on."

Points To Ponder

“We are entering the Age of Aquarius on November 11, 2011.
It will be a new time. The entire psyche is changing. You must
purify the mind, body and soul to be real, innocent, and sattvic
(pure). Elevate yourself to be angelic. This Age, which you will
serve, is an Age of awareness and experience.” Yogi Bhajan

"There is nothing wrong with people making money and
corporations being involved ... provided there is an avenue in
which those marketing forces are not the deciding factor in what
we are doing." Keith Olbermann, Commentator, Current Media

"A corporation's first purpose is to make money for its
stockholders, not to serve the needs of consumers. The
Gulf Coast oil disaster is an example of what can happen
as a result of a corporation's obsession with profits and their total
indifference and insensitivity to peoples' needs."

"Given the history of the food and drug multi-national corporations, it's a
good idea not to consume many of their products. For instance, if you look
at the history of aspartame, how it got approved, and how it still remains
on the market, there's plenty of reason to use great caution." Hari S. Bird

"Mankind's purpose is to serve others. Service is an intrinsic
value, not a value to be added. Those institutions that are
of the Piscean Age whereby success was measured by
money must now adopt the Aquarian Age paradigm, 'To
serve is to succeed
,' or soon disappear." H. S. Khalsa

"Due to the power and corrupting influence of Big Pharma, the teaching of
nutritional science and the use of vitamin and herbal supplements is not
taught to any significant extent in our medical schools. The obvious reason is
that teaching this science reduces the use of prescription drugs." H. S. Khalsa

"In certain settings, we can see the synergetic equation, 1 plus 1 equals 11,
manifest as a dynamic movement whereby 'me' morphs into 'we'. The Occupy
Wall Street
movement is just such a phenomenon." 1 Plus 1 Equals

"When corporations discover that their people are their
ultimate assets instead of their perpetual liabilities, everybody's
economy will prosper and grow." See The Thank You Economy.

Corporations are putting consumers at risk!
They exist to make money for stockholders,
not to serve the needs of the consumer.
They're about sales, not about service.
It's a matter of profit over prudence.
Too big to fail is too big to serve.
To serve is to succeed.
